Zahid sniffs plotters of anti-Najib rally

KUALA LUMPUR - Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi claimed today that he could smell the “masterminds” behind the plan by 34 Umno branches to hold a rally next month to call for Prime Minister Najib Razak’s resignation.

“I think that there are masterminds using these 34 branch leaders,” he told reporters attending a forum here. “I am not accusing anyone in particular, but as one of Umno’s vice presidents, I’ve caught a sniff of those who are behind this call.”

Zahid said the call would not threaten Najib’s position because the 34 Umno branches represented too small a portion of the 21,000 across the country.

However, he acknowledged that Umno should not “trivialise” the proposed rally.

Addressing the alleged masterminds, he told them to channel their grouses through “proper channels” instead of making use of Umno branches.

“I suggest that the masterminds, whether they are being covert or not, follow the existing rules and regulations,” he said.

“Umno is still alive and remains relevant. This fact needs to be respected by all Umno members and leaders.”
