Mt Kinabalu summit reopens to climbers

RANAU - The reopening of the new trail to Mount Kinabalu summit today was met with overwhelming response from the public.

Present at the ceremony was State Tourism, Culture and Environment minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, who flagged off the participants.

A batch of 135 climbers will be climbing the new route known as “Ranau Trail” which starts from Timpohon up to Low's peak.

Sabah Tourism Board communications manager Hana Harun was among the first group of 70 people who tried the new trail in the weekend prior to the reopening.

"The new trail is very scenic and there are lots of improvement.

"It is better than the previous trail and designed for the public to have an enjoyable climb," said Hana who had scaled the mountain several times, adding the two-day climb was not difficult.

Climbing activities were stopped following the June 5 earthquake which killed 18 people.

The mountain was opened to the public for climbing on Sept 1 but climbers could only hike up to the rest house at Laban Rata, at an altitude of 3,272m.
