Search operation mounted for four missing people in Kudat waters

KUDAT - The four people missing in Kudat waters, including three foreigners, have yet to be found as of 8.15am today. A search and rescue operation is ongoing west of the Simpang Mengayau area.

The operation involves eight vessels and a helicopter covering the 750 square nautical miles of the search area.

On Monday, David Hernandez Gasulla and Martha Miguel from Spain, as well as China citizen Lam Wai Yin who was piloting the boat, had left Pulau Balambangan, Banggi with a Malaysian woman, but failed to reach their destination at Simpang Mengayau here.

Sabah and Labuan regional maritime director First Admiral Mohd Zubil Mat Som had said that the group left the island at 5.30pm and was supposed to reach there at 8pm.

A report was lodged by the boat owner after they failed to reach their destination.

Zubil added there was a possibility of the boat malfunctioning due to the bad weather and strong currents.
