Activist charged for pix of Najib look-alike clown

KUALA LUMPUR - Designer and activist Fahmi Reza was charged on Monday in the Sessions Court for uploading a picture of a clown resembling Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

The 39-year-old was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act for improper use of network facilities to post a picture on his Instagram account with the intention to upset others.

He pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him.

Deputy public prosecutor Noor Svetlana Mohd Noor Nordin asked the court to set bail at RM20,000 with a surety and have Fahmi’s passport impounded.

His lawyer Syahredzan Johan argued that a bond should be imposed. “He works as a freelance designer and earns RM2,000 per month.”

“There’s no flight risk with him,” he said.

Sessions Court judge Mohd Zulbahrin Zainuddin set bail at RM5,000 with a surety. Fahmi was not required to surrender his passport.

“The next mention date will be fixed on June 17,” he said.
