Jimmy should resign as MP over invalid native cert, says Jeffrey

KOTA KINABALU - It would be an honourable act for Kota Kinabalu Jimmy Wong to resign as MP following the Kota Kinabalu Native court`s declaration that the native certificate in his possession was invalid, said STAR Sabah Chief Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.

"Jimmy Wong should respect the decision of the Native Court. The certificate could be genuine but he is not entitled to receive it, as he is not a native," he said.

Jeffrey said this when contacted for comment on Wong`s intention to appeal against the decision made by the district Native Court which was presided by Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai in April.

At the said hearing, Yeo said the court found that Jimmy had failed to give proper explanation about the validity of his native certificate.

He said Jimmy`s testimony during the hearing cast doubts among the panel of judges comprising himself as well as native chiefs Karim Ujud and John Anthony.

On March 28, 2012, Local Goverment & Housing minister Datuk Hajiji Noor told the State Assembly that Wong`s native certificate would be revoked because an investigation found that he was not qualified to claim Bumiputera status.

Although Wong had claimed to have Kadazan Dusun ancestry, Hajiji said the investigation found this to be untrue.

He said Wong`s Birth certificate showed that his parents were Chinese.

Convinced that the Native Court has made a right decision in regard to Wong`s native certificate, Jeffrey who is also Bingkor Assemblyman hoped the Native Court would also act on other who had obtained such document by dubios means.

Meanwhile, when contacted for comment on the same issue, Tamparuli Assemblyman-cum-president of Movement for Change Sabah (APS) Datuk Wilfred Bumburing opined that Wong has the right to appeal against the Native Court`s decision if he consciously believed he is native according to the law.

"This will also establish how the certificate was issued in the first place," he said.

Wong`s native certificate was issued on June 24,1981.
