Only passengers allowed inside airport terminals proposal as a security measure
He said that during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, it was proposed that only passengers be allowed at the check-in counters while those sending them off should remain outside the terminal building or allowed to be at a designated area.
"The cabinet has instructed the Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai to work out this proposal with Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad,” said Ahmad Zahid. “Hopefully, it can be implemented soon.”
Mr Ahmad Zahid, who is leading the Malaysian delegation to the 11th Asia-Europe Meeting Summit in Ulaanbaatar, said Liow was also asked to find a way to ensure that vehicles sending off or waiting for the air passengers would not be near the terminal.
"Perhaps these vehicles should only be allowed at the car park," he said.
The Deputy Prime Minister said he had also instructed that security be tightened at all Malaysian airports, including increasing the number of police and military personnel deployed under the National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS).
The NBOS is a collaborative framework involving more than 80 ministries and government agencies that was set up in 2009 to enhance efficiency and communication within the public sector.
Mr Ahamd Zahid said assets to enhance security control at the airports would also be increased, including purchasing sophisticated devices like high-definition CCTVs and facial recognition equipment.
Meanwhile, he hoped that other ASEAN countries would also tighten security at their respective airports.
