Bangsar bomb scare turns out to be a bag of clothes

KUALA LUMPUR: A bomb scare in Bangsar has turned out to be a false alarm.

A resident had left a bag of clothes at the intersection of Jalan Terasek 8 and Jalan Telawi, leading police to cordon off the area ealier.

Thankful that no serious incident occurred, neighbours nevertheless commended police on their prompt and professional response to the threat.

"I must compliment the police force for taking precautionary measures," said Dr Mohamadon Abdullah, a neighbour who lives just across the street from where the suspicious bag was found.

"I saw a lot of people coming out onto the street. It started at about noon.

"The police cordoned off the area and secured the kindergarten premises," he said, indicating the kindergarten which is only steps away from where the bag was found.

"The police were very, very professional. They came complete with a bomb squad. I was a bit worried because this is a busy area and many people walk past, but the police secured the area very well. They did their work in their silent way, calmly and cautiously," he said.

"Malaysians take security for granted," said Dr Mohamadon, who urged for more caution.

He also said police also explained the situation to motorists who had wanted to drive past the roadblock.

Assunta Rani, 55, said she was scared when she saw policemen on the street.

"I was passing by at about 2.15pm and saw something happening at the location. A neighbour saw an unattended bag and called the police. The neighbours suspected that it could be something dangerous," said the cleaner who works nearby.

"The police told us to stay back, and then I saw the bag," she said.

"I felt very scared. I don't want to die yet. I've got a lot of things to do!" she said with a nervous laugh.

Police dispersed by about 3pm after the area was given the all-clear.

Bangsar is one of the areas being closely monitored by security forces for signs of a terrorist attack.
