1,600 SFI workers without pay for 6 months
Its secretary, Catherine Jikunan, said the state government should be concerned and take care of the local workers who had been left with no source of income for the past six months.
“It is time for the state government to get down to the ground and listen to workers’ problems,” she said in a statement yesterday.
Jikunan said MTUC Sabah was shocked to hear the plight of the 1,600 local workers in SFI which had stopped its operations.
“MTUC Sabah has once again been shaken by the workers’ situation in Sabah Forest Industries, Sipitang. It’s been over six months SFI is not operational and this situation has put pressure on the 1,600 workers,” she said.
According to the Workers Union of Sabah Timber (STIEU), the workers had not been asked by their employer to do any work for six months.
However, they were required to be at the factory or the office on a daily basis according to the working hours.
“It’s been six months we have been going back and forth to work from morning till evening without doing any work. This situation puts pressure on us because we just sit around doing nothing, except for some cleaning chores,” said STIEU president Martin and secretary Engrit Liaw.
