KOTA KINABALU - A cheongsam pageant will be held at Padang Merdeka on January 26 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year Carnival that is jointly organized by The Federation of Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS) and Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK).

The contest aims to provide an opportunity for women of different age groups to display the elegance of Chinese attire tradition, especially during the auspicious Chinese New Year festive season.

The winner will receive RM800 cash prize, followed by RM600 and RM400 for the first runner-up and second runner-up respectively. There will also be seven honourable mentions that come with RM100 cash prize each, as well as RM300 for the best cheongsam design.

The pageant is open to women who are currently residing in Sabah and able to converse in Mandarin. The cheongsam pageant contest is divided into Category A and B, each comprising 15 contestants.

Category A is for women aged between 13 and 40 years old, featuring modern cheongsam, whereas Category B is open to women aged 41 and above, showcasing traditional cheongsam.

The contest will be held on Thursday, January 26, from 5 pm to 8 pm. All contestants must arrive at the venue before 4.30 pm.

As for rules and regulations, contestants must fill in an application form attached with a colour 3R/4R photograph. Registration is free of charge. Contestants will compete in two rounds, each round making up 50 per cent of the total points.

The first round is two-minute talent performance while the second round is catwalk presentation. In round two, contestants are required to come up with their own Chinese New Year greetings and introduce themselves in under a minute. Contestants must be dressed in a cheongsam during the catwalk presentation, but other types of costumes are allowed for the talent performance.

The contestants will be judged based on individual personality, hairstyle, headgear, dressing, stage effect and performance. The organizer reminds participants that their performance must not contain any inappropriate elements and that the organizer has the right to request contestants to make changes to their performance.

Contestants are required to bring their own VCD or CD for their performance. LED screen will be provided by the organizer and contestants can use their own background during the competition.
