Esszone curfew to stay in place until Jan 30

KOTA KINABALU - Seven districts within the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone) will remain under a 6pm-to-6am curfew until Jan 30. The security measure will enter its 58th phase tomorrow. It covers the districts of Kunak, Lahad Datu, Kinabatangan, Sandakan, Tawau, Beluran and Semporna.

Esszone also encompasses waters off Pulau Gulisan, Tanjung Bidadari, Pulau Tambisan, Silam, Tungku, Pulau Adal, Alice Reef, Timbun Mata, Kalumpangan, Batuan Unarang, Pelabuhan, Wallace Bay, Jambongan, Timur Jambongan, Pulau Lihiman, Pulau Pundaras, Torongohok, Pura-Pura and Kuala Sugut, among others.

In a statement, Sabah police commissioner Datuk Ramli Din advised those residing in curfew areas to abide by the order and refrain from going to sea without permission from the district police chief.

“No one is allowed to enter or be in the curfew areas, and residents at said areas are required to stay home during the period.

“I have also authorised district police chiefs to issue a (curfew exemption) permit only to fishermen who have met (safety) requirements, and those who wish to ply the waters during curfew hours,” Ramli added.

The curfew was enforced in Sabah in 2014 after the kidnapping of a marine policeman by Filipino gunmen who ambushed a resort on Pulau Mabul, off Semporna.

The sea curfew is part of a security measure to prevent kidnapping and any form of intrusion.
