Hisham: Only Najib can decide on Sabah polls

SEGAMAT - Only Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak can decide whether there will be early elections in Sabah or not, said Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

He said he will leave it to the Barisan Nasional chairman on whether Sabah will hold elections anytime soon.

"However, as the Umno vice-president, I would like to remind all our members, especially those in the election machinery, to be ready.

"It does not matter whether there will be elections in Sabah, Johor or anywhere else, what is important is that we are ready to face any kind of situation," he said after visiting flood victims at Sekolah Agama Kampung Jawa here Thursday.

He was asked to comment on an exclusive report by The Star on the possibility that Sabah will hold state elections as early as April.

It is understood that Najib has given the nod to the polls proposal, but has asked for a detailed evaluation of all the seats before a final decision is made.

The idea of holding separate polls has been simmering since June last year after Barisan's success in the Sarawak state elections.

Sabah had its state polls held separately before the 2004 general election.
