PTI just out of jail is shot over attack
The 35-year-old paperless Filipino, who is responsible for 13 criminal cases in the city and at least one burglary in Keningau between December last year and January, was shot below his armpit and ribs.
The foreigner who was released from prison last October after serving three months for a drug offence, was warded and reported to be in stable condition.
Another man in his 20s, who was standing near a tree at the scene and believed to be his friend, was also detained to facilitate investigations.
City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra said the incident unfolded when a police team patrolling the area spotted a Honda City identified as the vehicle used in a burglary at Keningau the previous day.
He said city police were put on alert after a premises in a housing area in Keningau was broken into at about 12.15pm on Friday.
"The burglar broke into the premises and made off with several items before fleeing towards the State capital.
"On Saturday, as our team were patrolling the area, they spotted the vehicle parked at a space in Taman Bukit Setia at about 2am and approached for inspection," he said.
As they neared the car, they noticed a man in the driver's seat on his handphone. The team ordered the man to alight after introducing themselves as policemen, but he refused.
The man continued to defy orders to step out of the vehicle and grabbed a meat cleaver when police proceeded to smash the driver's seat window.
He then swung the weapon towards a policeman through the smashed window resulting in the officer firing two shots at him.
The shots did not stop the suspect from reaching out for a knife which he again used to slash at the police through the broken window.
He then shifted to the front passenger seat and attempted to flee when police fired another shot at him.
The man was subsequently apprehended by the other two policemen at the scene. The policeman who smashed the car window also sustained slight injuries due to the broken glass shards.
Chandra said further examination on the vehicle showed that it was reported missing in a house break-in at Taman View KKIP at 4am on Thursday, adding that the car's original plate number had been tampered with. - DE
