IGP: Clash between Umno, PPBM youth wings shameful
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar says that as adults, those involved should have shown some level of maturity
KUALA LUMPUR - Police have questioned 11 individuals over the fracas between the youth wings of Umno and PPBM that took place at the Sunway Putra mall earlier this week.
In revealing this, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar also labelled the incident shameful.
“We are adults, not children anymore. We need to show some level of maturity.
“Getting involved in incidents like this is just shameful,” he told reporters after attending the monthly assembly here this morning.
On Tuesday, close to 200 Umno Youth members were involved in a scuffle with members of the PPBM youth wing, also called Armada, who were heading to the Putra World Trade Centre, which is the Umno headquarters.
Police were forced to intervene after the situation got tense with the Armada members seeking shelter in the mall.
The Armada members had planned to walk to PWTC across the road from the mall, to hand over a “special invite” to Umno president Najib Razak to their “Nothing to Hide 2.0” forum next month.
However, they had barely finished their lunch at a café in the mall, when their plans were thwarted with a surprise intervention by a group of Umno Youth members who refused to allow them to leave the building. This led to a scuffle shortly after.
Dang Wangi police chief Sukri Kaman was later quoted as saying that no notice had been submitted for the gathering by either side, as required under the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA).
