Gooi Soon Seng said according to the experts’ reports which he had received, there were traces of precursors and degrading products of VX.
“We have to check with the experts and see what this means,” he told reporters when met after case mention at the High Court here.
The senior lawyer added that the substance might not necessarily be VX agent as claimed in the reports.
“VX is supposed to be very potent and even 0.1ml is enough to kill a person.
“But we can say that there were no side effects on the two women,” Gooi said, adding that there are two types of VX nerve agent, VX MN and VX W.
On Feb 24, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar announced the results of preliminary tests by the chemistry department on the body of Jong Nam.
The department said it had found a dangerous chemical substance known as Ethyl (S)-2 -diisopropylaminoethyl methylphosphonothiolate, or VX nerve agent, on Jong Nam’s eyes and face.
The substance has been described as the most toxic nerve agent in the world, and is said to be used only in chemical warfare.
It is also banned under Malaysia’s Chemical Weapons Convention Act 2005 and the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).
Khalid said then that one of the suspects arrested for the murder was suffering side effects from the VX nerve agent. However, he did not disclose the suspect’s identity.
Siti and Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong are accused of murdering Jong Nam on Feb 13 at Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2).
Jong Nam, who was the eldest son of former North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, arrived in Malaysia on Feb 6, and was scheduled to board a 9am flight to Macau on Feb 13.
While at klia2, he was approached by a woman who sprayed him with a liquid, while another woman held a cloth over his face.
He died on the way to Putrajaya Hospital, sparking a diplomatic row between Putrajaya and Pyongyang.
Several North Korean men who had met the two women fled the country the same day that Jong Nam was killed. - FMT
