Manhunt for five Filipinos who escaped from detention centre

KOTA KINABALU - Police have released details of five Filipino men who escaped from the temporary detention centre in Menggatal here on New Year's Day.

Kota Kinabalu City police chief Asst Comm M. Chandra said the five were identified as Azmi Alim, 29, Mus Mansul, 62, Totong Alipudin, 35, Amir Sulaiman, 23, and Alji Sadain, 23.

All five were facing charges of illegal entry into the state.

The public have been urged to inform the police of their whereabouts as a statewide hunt continues for the fourth day.

They could face up to two years in jail or a fine or both.

"Initial investigations showed that seven Filipinos forced their way out by rushing to a guard who had opened the door of their block to collect their dinner utensils," ACP Chandra said.

He added that two of them, aged 19 and 22, were caught immediately by the guards at the detention centre for illegal immigrants.

He said anyone with any information on the five escapees can contact police or the nearest police station or call investigating officer Insp Paul Lia at 014-5969134.
