Anwar expects Mahathir to hand over in 2020

KUALA LUMPUR - PKR president Anwar Ibrahim says he expects to take over from Dr Mahathir Mohamad by 2020.

In an interview with Bloomberg Television, Anwar said his rivals have no legitimacy.

“There is no sign of any party introducing or promoting or lobbying for other names.

“It does not stop other individuals with ambitions,” Anwar said, describing them as “irrelevant”.

Mahathir has recently come under pressure to specify a date to hand over power to Anwar, as agreed by Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders before the 2018 general election.

The prime minister, who returned to the top post following PH’s victory in the 2018 general election, has repeatedly stated that he would keep his word to step down after about two years.

Anwar meanwhile said the government must allay fears of the Malays, and called for the government’s affirmative action to be extended to the poor of all races.
