Fuzi: Police need time to probe seized cash claimed by Umno

The IGP says the investigation is ongoing and police will not be hasty in taking action.

KUALA LUMPUR - Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said police will need time to investigate a recent seizure of cash which Umno claims is election campaign contributions that belong to the party.

Fuzi said the investigation was ongoing and the police would not resort to any hasty action.

“There is a process to make claims, we must follow the legal process. Since the investigation is still going on and needs time, we cannot be hasty in taking action,” he told a news conference at Bukit Aman police headquarters today.

The cash in question is believed to have been seized from condominiums linked to former prime minister Najib Razak and his family.

Umno has laid claim for the return of the cash which it said was being transferred to the new party leadership after Najib resigned as Umno president.

Media reports said Najib had lodged a police report that the cash was campaign donations.

On another matter, Fuzi said police had yet to call up Baling MP and former Tabung Haji chairman Abdul Azeez Rahim for questioning.

“We have no directive. The current investigation is being carried out by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC),” he said.

Azeez had confirmed earlier this week that MACC officers “visited” his houses and office and seized RM500,000 which he said was intended to finance a mission to Gaza, Palestine, planned for after the May 9 polls.

He said part of the money was meant for the Baling Umno division to be given to the constituents for Ramadan and Aidilfitri. - FMT
