NGO urges speedy release on A-G’s federal audit on 1MDB

The Society for the Promotion of Human Rights (Proham) today urged the Auditor-General (A-G) to declassify the federal audit on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) after the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) released their report on Thursday.

The rights group said this was to restore public confidence in the government, and that transparency and accountability in investigating issues such as 1MDB was important.

“We are not in agreement that the criminal breach of trust lies solely on the CEO of 1MDB and therefore the speedy release of the A-G’s Audit Report is imperative,“ Proham chairman Datuk Kuthubul Zaman Bukhari and secretary-general Datuk Dr Denison Jayasooria said in a joint-statement.

“This delay has impacted negatively public perception on the full disclosure and transparency of the investigations,” the statement read.

They added that public discussion should be held on government's involvement with business and financial investment to prevent power abuse.

On Thursday, A-G Tan Sri Ambrin Buang confirmed that the federal audit report on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) was still classified although he did not give further details on when it would be declassified.

The PAC has urged the authorities in its report to investigate former 1MDB CEO Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi over weaknesses in the company’s management.

In the report, the panel said 1MDB’s board of directors failed in their responsibilities to the company and its shareholders by allowing its management to make decisions that were not in line with good accounting practices.

1MDB is currently under probe by the authorities in several countries, with Luxembourg the latest to investigate the state investment firm for alleged money laundering.
