City Hall should not have chopped down trees – environmentalist

KOTA KINABALU - The Landscape Division of the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) should have done a scientific research before chopping down the four trees at Gaya Street here, according to an environmentalist.

Dr CY Vun, who is a member of the Sabah Environmental Protection Association (Sepa), said he regretted that the City Hall went ahead and felled the trees without carrying out a thorough research to get public views, especially the environmentalists.

He was commenting on the recent statement by Landscape Division director Welter Kinson that the City Hall had no choice but to chop down four trees at the Gaya Street here due to their unsafe condition and stunted growth.

Welter said it was found that the trees were in weak condition due to rotting branches and roots, lesion and termite infections and they could snap and break down any time during a strong wind.

In a statement yesterday, Vun said chopping down the existing trees in the city area was not only a waste of public funds but also against the City Hall’s tree planting and beautification programme.

He noted that this year alone, City Hall had already planted 4,075 trees in Kota Kinabalu and in June 2012 it announced the one million trees planting programme at the cost of RM1 million.

Vun said senior agronomist Chung Yit Tin, who has 35 years of expertise in the agro-plant field work, also disagreed with City Hall and felt that it should have sought expert views from the agronomists and environmentalists.

He said according to Chung, the four trees chopped down were only lack of bio-fertilizers and proper maintenance since they were planted 18 years ago.

“It was unlikely that the trees had been attacked by termites because the 60-year-old shop houses located nearby still stand until today, with no sign of infection from termites,” he added.

This story is very similar to one in Kuching Sarawak (see the video link)

Mahathor bum wiper (called "pig face" by some) Ting Pek King company charged $22K per tree for cutting down 300 trees on Tun Jugah Rd in Kuching in 2010...

Yes, $22K not $22 to cut down each tree on some pretext of raid development...!

Cutting down of our lovely trees to make way for the new flyover..

Bye bye trees.. thank you for accompanying us for these 20 years along this road..We grew with you from a little shrub to the big trees you are today.. and now they've cut you down just like that..

The creaking & groaning of the trees as they fall down for good is so sad.. seems like they are crying..

For all these 20 years they've given us so much.. and how to do we treat them in the end when we dont need them anymore ?....

It takes just 1 minute for them to cut off each tree.. but how long does it take to plant it into the tree it is today?.. Is this what we have to give up for better traffic, a better future?

    2. Hey, don't be racist. What does the Chinese have to do with the gate (That is suppose to be an arch)? It's a public street, why must there be a gate?

    3. Mungkin ada sebab kenapa perkara ini dilakukan. DBKK harus memberikan penjelasan kepada masyarakat sebab perlu untuk semua ini.

From the outside, the shop may look like it is not infected from termites, but if you look inside, it may actually have signs of infection from termites.

    1. So what's the problem now? Chop the trees?

    2. That is true, termite infections cannot be identified on the surface. The shop houses should get the termite experts to check out their place.

  3. I don't think city hall would simply chopped down the tree without doing any scientific research.

  18. It was only four trees, they were decaying and proved as a hazardous setting element. Now, the entire problem comes into play only when someone gets hurt or dies from a falling branch, then we blame the government and ask why they didn't take it down sooner.

The grass is always greener on the other side.
