Yong: Find a solution, not bicker and point fingers

FELDA SAHABAT, LAHAD DATU: Finding a solution is far more important than bickering about who should be blamed for the Tanduo siege and the ensuing fiasco.

Sabah Progressive Party president Datuk Yong Teck Lee said the focus should be channelled towards finding an end to the standoff here, rather than pointing fingers.

“This has been going on for more than three weeks, and it is not healthy,” Yong told reporters when he visited the media centre at the Felda Residence Sahabat, Wednesday.

“For us in Sabah, we have to focus on finding the best way to end this,” he said, alluding to certain criticism that the incident here was staged by the Barisan Nasional.

Both the BN as well as Pakatan Rakyat have been pointing finger at each time and accusing the other of being behind the intrusion.

Yong also expressed his confidence to the military abilities and believed the security forces will be able to settle the matter in no time.

“We support the increased number of security personnel coming, and we hope the government will give them the maximum assistance in terms of resources and logistics for them to complete the task they are facing now,” he said.

The former chief minister disclosed that during his reign in 1997, they had organised military exercises to repel or evict intruders from the state.

On another development, Yong said they will be visiting the affected villagers from Tanduo who first fled to Labian, and those from Labian and Batu who also fled their villages recently to find out their needs.

Many are being put up at Dewan Embara in one of the Sahabat schemes.

“We believe there are some 300 “refugees of war” here and we would like to find out their needs. We know that the government is supplying them some assistance but we believe they are short of some things like milk for the babies.

“We have several contacts of people who are willing to help but we will do this through the right channel and authorities, because the last thing we want to do is to do, anything, that in any way would compromise the security operations,” he said.
