Clerk dies as parcel explodes in his hands

TUMPAT — A primary school clerk was killed when a black package he took from on top of a relative’s car exploded.

Mohd Yusrizal Mat Zain, 32, had removed the package placed above the car belonging to his brother-in-law, which was parked in front of the latter’s family home in Taman Seri Periuk, Kampung Periuk, at about 11am yesterday.

Kelantan CID chief ACP Lai Yong Heng, who disclosed this, said Yusrizal suffered injuries on his hands and body and died instantly.

ACP Lai said the victim was from Kampung Kenor, Kuala Krai, and was a clerk at SRK Manik Urai in Kuala Krai.

He had come to visit his in-laws on Saturday night. He was married and had a four-month-old daughter.

The explosion also damaged the Naza Citra car on which the package had been placed, as well as a Perodua Alza parked beside it.

The explosion shocked residents of the housing estate and even nearby villages, causing them to rush out to check on what had happened.

The brother-in-law, who declined to be identified, said Yusrizal and his family had come to their house to celebrate Hari Raya.

He said the package on the roof of the car was first spotted by Yusrizal’s wife when she opened the front door of the house.

He said Yusrizal then walked over to take the package.

The contents of the package have yet to be ascertained.
