Yong called up by police for accepting challenge

KOTA KINABALU - The offer made by Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to challenge former Sabah chief minister Datuk Yong Teck Lee to slap him still stands, said the SAPP president.

Speaking to reporters after giving his statement to the police at the city police headquarters in Karamunsing yesterday in regard to the incident, Yong said he will accept the challenge only if Zahid agrees to come and visit Lahad Datu and Semporna without being escorted by bodyguards, police and army.

“We will come to that stage when he visits Lahad Datu and Semporna without being escorted by any bodyguards,” said Yong.

On April 7, Zahid, during his address to his Home Ministry staff at Putrajaya, had challenged Yong to slap him himself and need not pay someone else to do so.

Two days later, Yong accepted the challenge and said that the offer of RM501 ‘for the slap’ will be donated to the Tabung Wira Lahad Datu (Lahad Datu Heros Funds) for the benefit of the families of the fallen heroes who sacrificed in defending Sabah during the Lahad Datu Tanduo intrusion in March 2013.

The ‘slap bounty’ incident came to light when Yong criticized Putrajaya following the kidnapping incident at a resort island off Semporna on April 2.

Yong also criticized Zahid for the latter’s failure to reveal the name of the three opposition leaders whom he alleged were behind the Lahad Datu Tanduo intrusion.

Meanwhile, Yong said he was called by the police to give his statement following a police report lodged by several NGOs’ in Selangor several days ago linking his name to the ‘slap bounty’ incident.

“I was made to understand that there were three individuals who had lodged a police report against me in Selangor.

“I do not have the full information or the name of the NGOs but I believe the report was made in regard to this incident,” he said.

Asked of the latest kidnapping incident in Semporna, Yong said he believed the incident is more than an ordinary kidnapping incident.

“The group (kidnappers) only abducted two persons, they were armed with weapons and if they had the chance they could had shot more people.

“As far as I am concerned, it is not an ordinary kidnapping incident but more of an intrusion,” he said.
