A former Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Masters student who was arrested this week allegedly over Facebook postings critical of the Sabah Government has been described as “brilliant” by those who know him.
News of Jufazli Shi Ahmad’s arrest went viral on social media. The 26-year-old, whose parents are both Umno members, founded Gerakan Anak Muda Selamatkan Sabah, a group which gathers youths and which in the past has exposed alleged corruption involving Sabah leaders.
He has also authored a book documenting alleged wrongdoings of former Sarawak chief minister Abdul Taib Mahmud, titled “Membina Empayar”.
Jufazli, who boasts close to 40,000 Facebook fans, actively posts his views, criticisms and exposes of the Barisan Nasional-led Sabah government.
One former university mate who declined to be named said Jufazli was an active debater during his Universiti Malaysia Sabah days, having represented the university.
“He is not only active on Facebook, but on the ground too where he joins charity programmes when he comes back to Sabah,” he said, but added he was not aware if Jufazli had joined any political party, despite his very vocal stand against Chief Minister Musa Aman.
“His arrest is political in nature. The authorities should not be investigating him but the issues of corruption which he has raised,” he told FMT.
“I’m not sure what is the history between Musa and him, but his criticisms of Musa have made him famous,” said another friend on condition of anonymity.
“I believe he is sincere in his struggle. I feel sad that the authorities arrested him when they should be focusing on investigating his exposes.”
Jufazli’s lawyer Wan Anwar Wan Ibrahim said his client would be transferred to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah today.
He is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation, Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
