Abu Sayyaf-linked Malaysian nabbed in Quezon City

QUEZON CITY - Police on Saturday arrested a Malaysian national suspected of being a member of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in an operation in Barangay Culiat, Quezon City.

Chief Inspector Roque Merdigia of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group's Anti-Transnational Crime Unit (ATCU) said Amin Aklam, a "hardened" ASG member, was arrested at a house along Cotabato Street in Barangay Culiat.

Merdigia said in a report that joint ATCU and Intelligence Group members conducted the operation at around 4 a.m. Saturday.

He said Aklam is affiliated with international terrorist groups.

Police said the suspect is included in the list of most wanted persons "affiliated with Abu Sayyaf" issued by the Department of National Defense and the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

The suspect is facing a kidnapping with frustrated murder case filed before the Jolo, Sulu Regional Trial Court Branch 3.

Late last month, Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa revealed the presence of ASG members in Manila.

Dela Rosa made the revelation during the presentation of P6 million worth of high-powered firearms seized from a gun-running group in San Juan City.

The PNP chief said the firearms were bought by the ASG from the group. —ALG, GMA News
