M'sians seek plaintiff status in 'Musa Aman case'

A group of 255 Malaysians has teamed up with Swiss NGO Bruno Manser Fund (BMF), seeking to be admitted as plaintiffs in an ongoing criminal case linked to Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman.

According to BMF, the case involves accusations of money laundering by Swiss bank UBS of over US$90 million (about RM275 million) on behalf of Musa and his alleged nominee Michael Chia (right in photo).

“The case was opened by the Swiss attorney-general (AG) on Aug 29, following a criminal complaint by the BMF,” it said in a statement.

The Malaysians applied to the Swiss Federal Criminal Court after the Swiss AG announced on Oct 26 that BMF should be excluded from the case as it is not directly affected by the alleged laundering.

The court is expected to decide on the matter within the next three months, BMF said.

In its complaint against the AG's decision last week, BMF had argued that it should be admitted as a plaintiff as it is representing Malaysian citizens whose local authorities are “incapable of action”.

It further argued that local authorities are hampered from acting due to Musa's political standing and influence.

The NGO, in its submission to the Swiss court, outlined that de facto law minister Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz (right) had told Parliament that Chia was carrying Singapore $13 million (RM40 million) for Sabah Umno.

It submitted that Mohd Nazri's son has been accused of driving a luxury vehicle belonging to Chia.

Swiss companies are forbidden by law to be involved in corruption and money-laundering anywhere in the world, although it is rare for a company to be convicted of this.

These people are not Sarawakians nor Sabahans and do not have the mandate to speak for the people of Sarawak or Sabah. 51. Generally, Malaysians in Sarawak is quite familiar with the civilization of Switzerland, a small landlocked country in Europe. For example, until 50 and 60s, the country with no natural resources, was still poor to such an extent that parents had to hand over their children for financial compensation even to strangers, who would often subject them to sexual abuses or child labor.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Now most of them have died or living in shame. BBC’s regular TV program “Reporters” last Sunday evening revealed that some of the children as young as seven years old would be handed over by their mothers, because of the pressure of life after the Second World War, to strangers to work in orchards or small factories. Subsequently, the children, as they grew up, would lose contact with their families.

Yet the Swiss Government has not apologized to them or acknowledges that such inhumane treatments of children ever took place. In this respect, the successive Swiss Governments, unlike the Australian and New Zealand governments remain insensitive to the feelings of people, who had been robbed of their childhood.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Obviously, the neighbors had been insensitive to what had been going on near them. It would be impossible for such weird things to happen right under the noses without being noticed.

Generally, the Swiss, who elect the Government, choose to remain quiet and do not have the feeling of guilt that some men and women in their society had been robbed of their child hood. They had been subjected to sexual abuses and child labor.

Few things are crystal clear. But Prime Minister Najib Razak is sure that he wants to take the 3.2m Sabahans with him on his “journey” to make Malaysia a rich world nation by 2020. And the man he has been working closely to develop Sabah is Chief Minister Musa Aman. Sabah, says Najib, is a land of investment opportunities. It is here that his 1Malaysia unity policy is exemplified where the indigenous Kadazans, Dusuns, Muruts, Malays, ethnic Chinese and Indians live and work as one Malaysian people.

  57. Working hand-in-hand towards making Malaysia a high-income country

From a sluggish and directionless economy that Sabah chief minister Musa Aman inherited in 2003, the north Borneo island state has been booming like never before despite a global recession. This fact hasn’t been lost on prime minister Najib Razak. During a whirlwind visit to Kota Kinabalu on June 29, he gave his unequivocal support to Mr Musa for his spectacular socio-economic transformation of the north Borneo island state in his seven years of office. “I have not made any decision about anything,” Mr Najib told reporters who wanted to know if there would be changes in the state administration.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Mr Musa wants to make Sabah the most developed Malaysian state in five years. And his penchant for serving the people, particularly in bringing wealth to them, pleases Mr Najib who said that nothing else was more important than that.

“My advice is to concentrate on serving the people,” he said. “We must show that we are a party that cares for people.”

Being an economist, Mr Najib understands business better than anyone else and he finds in Mr Musa someone who can help him turn Malaysia into a high-income country under his government transformation programme, according to political pundits. They say Mr Najib has a lot of empathy for Sabahans’ aspirations and he understands their expectations.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Together with Mr Musa, Mr Najib put words into action. After lunch with Koran reading contestants, they went to Lido Square, the hub of mainly ethnic Chinese food hawkers and coffee shops, where they mingled with the crowd during their walkabout, a hallmark of Mr Najib since he became prime minister two years ago, to talk to and learn more about them.
