Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek stressed yesterday that the Government never had the intention to ban the website as more than 15 million users in Malaysia are registered on Facebook.
“Many people use it for various purposes, including personal communication and online business. To shut it down is just impossible,” he said at the launch of AirAsia’s Redbox, a new low-cost courier service.
Redbox is designed by the airline to provide customers up to 50% savings in costs compared to existing courier services.
Shabery said the call to ban Facebook was only a suggestion from certain quarters in trying to filter abuses on the Internet.
“The ministry so far has received more than 2,000 reports involving Facebook abuses and when I say that we are looking into the cases, they think that we want to ban the website,” he said.
He said he had conducted a survey and the results showed that 54% people who took part in it do not support the banning of Facebook, 24% supported the ban while the rest neither agreed nor disagreed.
“Most of them do not understand how to use Facebook. We cannot simply ban or filter certain pages from Facebook unless we lodge a report with Facebook,” he added.
