Saiful sues Anwar for RM50m over sodomy claim

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim is facing a RM50 million (S$20 million) civil suit from his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan for allegedly sodomising the latter in 2008 and purportedly harming his reputation.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim is facing a RM50 million (S$20 million) civil suit from his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan for allegedly sodomising the latter in 2008 and purportedly harming his reputation.

Mohd Saiful, 27, filed the suit on June 23 and the matter was brought up on Wednesday (Aug 13) for case management. In the suit, Mohd Saiful sought damages for physical pain and suffering since the alleged sodomy incident, among other things.

Saiful's lawyer Zamri Idrus said that the deputy registrar has ordered Anwar to file his defence by Sep 3.

Anwar was convicted and sentenced to five years in jail on March 7 on charges he sodomised Mohd Saiful, but is freed pending an appeal. Anwar said the charge is false and part of a long-running government campaign to smear his name.
