PKR leader: PAS' hudud is different from Quran

Muslims are obliged to reject PAS' version of hudud as it is not in accordance with the Quran, claimed PKR central committee member Latheefa Koya today.

Unlike the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code II Enactment 1993 passed yesterday, she argued, the Quran does not prescribe punishment for apostasy nor makes any mention of stoning.

The Quran also differed with PAS' enactment on two other counts - stipulation for amputation, and the witness requirements in rape and adultery (zina) cases.

"The so-called hudud of PAS as made public in the Syariah Criminal Code amendments (as passed by the Kelantan state assembly yesterday) is certainly not found in the Quran.

"Therefore, it ought to be rejected outright. It is their own creation, and it is creating confusion and mischief in God's name," said Latheefa in a statement.

The Syariah Criminal Code II prescribes stoning to death as the punishment for zina if the offender is married to someone else and has already had sex with his or her married partner before the offence.

For those who convert out of Islam, the Kelantan law requires that they are imprisoned until they repent.

Otherwise, they would be sentenced to death and their property confiscated by the state.

“In view of the above, Kelantan PAS and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang must suspend their attempt to introduce their version of hudud which is clearly at odds with the Holy Quran.

“Muslims are obliged to accept hudud as explained in the Holy Quran, and not any other man-made version,” Latheefa said.

Instead of pursuing hudud for political mileage, she said Kelantan should instead focus on the higher objectives of syariah.

These include prioritising poverty eradication, improving education systems, ending corruption, striving for peace and harmony, and upholding human dignity and freedom.
