DAP rep: BN has no hope; PR has changed

SUNGAI PETANI - "Politics is all about playing a game and I'm in despair, I don't want to play anymore!" declared DAP Berapit state assembly member Lydia Ong Kok Fooi.

Ong, who started her career with feminist movements, told Sin Chew Daily that she will not be contesting the next general election, emotionally lamenting that there is no hope for the BN, and even the highly expected Pakatan Rakyat has changed.

"Someone said that I don't know how to play the political game and I told that person I know the game and its rules, but I just don't want to play it as I don't want to go against my conscience," she said.

Ong said that she joined politics regardless of her family's disapproval, as she thought that as a citizen, she should fight for the country. However, she has failed to achieve her ideal so far.

"As my grandfather said, 'we really can do nothing about it'," she said.

'Pakatan Rakyat takes the old path of its opponent'

She stressed that she is not in despair only of BN's attitude, but also Pakatan Rakyat's fight for power, which is actually taking the old path of its opponent.

She wonders whether everyone is still thinking that Pakatan Rakyat can bring regime change.

"Pakatan Rakyat has failed to take over the power even in the 2013 general election, obviously, it is impossible for it to achieve the target in the next general election.

"The country really needs a clean and honest policy maker to lead us," she said.

Ong also recalled some events along her political career.

She said that on the night when the DAP won Penang in the 2008 general election, party members encouraged and supported each other. It was a team, the force needed in politics. However, time tells and all facts and fights have become increasingly clear.

She said that Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng is smart but since he is an English school-educated man, he does not understand ethics. She accused that instead of a political leader defending feminism, he is actually a chauvinist.

"He was absent from voting on the Prevention of Terrorism Bill 2015 (Pota) Bill, with his nature, he will never apologise.

But we can't blame him as I believe that it is because he has lost confidence in people after losing everything when he was imprisoned.

It might also because of from losing everything in the past to retrieving everything today, he can't afford losing them again, we need experts to study his inner world," she added.

Ong said that another possibility is, there are so many people around him who tell no truth but just fan the flames.

"When you have high expectation of something, once your hope is gone, it will exacerbate the degree of disappointment," she said.

She did not answer when being asked whether she will continue in fighting for feminism but just pointed out that the real decision-makers do not actually care about the people.

'Why does Lim Kit Siang want to cooperate with Dr M'?

When being asked whether she will stay in the party after removing her state assembly member identity, Ong replied with a smile, "I wonder what kind of action will be taken against me after I've said so much today."

She said that a political party must be conscientious. She does not understand why DAP Parliamentary Leader wants to cooperate with former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. All she knows is when Lim said that the DAP could conditionally cooperate with the BN after the party successfully defended the Penang regime in the 2013 general election, former DAP Chairman the late Karpal Singh had strongly opposed it, and said, "over my dead body."

She said that the response of Ramkarpal Singh to the issue showed that the Tiger is back.

She stressed that everyone is playing the game and no one dares to come forward. It is a pity that our country does not have someone like former Premier of China, Chiang Ching-kuo, or Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew, even if some people accused him of being autocratic, as at least Lee had brought Singapore prosperity and made Singaporeans proud.
