Ex-cop with alleged Sayyaf links nabbed in Sabah

Philippine law enforcement authorities went to Malaysia last week to take custody of a former policeman arrested there for his alleged involvement in the 2011 kidnapping of Australian national Warren Rodwell in Zamboanga Sibugay.

SPO2 Jun A. Malban, who was arrested by Malaysian authorities in Lahad Datu in Sabah last month, has a pending arrest warrant for kidnapping for ransom issued by Judge Josefino Bael of Regional Trial Court Branch 24, Ipil, Zamboanga, Sibugay.

Rodwell was abducted by the notorious Abu Sayyaf group in Ipil town in December 2011 and was released on March 23, 2013.

Police said Rodwell had identified Malban as the negotiator and spokesperson of the Abu Sayyaf during his captivity. At that time, Malban was allegedly using the alias Michael Soo/Zue.

“Further investigation conducted by the PNP reveals that Malban is the cousin of Abu Sayyaf leaders Khair Mundos and Borhan Mundos,” said Senior Superintendent Roberto Fajardo, acting director of the anti-kidnapping group of the Philipppine National Police.

He said after the Rodwell kidnapping, Malban went on AWOL and hid from authorities until his arrest in Sabah last April 28 for violation of immigration laws.

Fajardo said Malban's arrest was the result of the close coordination by the PNP, the National Bureau of Investigation and Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission with the Malaysian counterparts and through the INTERPOL.

“Continous manhunt operation is being undertaken for the arrest of other at-large suspects,” Fajardo said. —KBK, GMA News
