I am not involved in May Day Rally – Bumburing

KOTA KINABALU - Angkatan Perubahan Sabah (APS) president Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Bumburing has denied any involvement in the May Day Rally scheduled to be held in the state capital on Friday (May 1).

Bumburing, who denied yesterday, also demanded that authorities remove his name as a respondent in the public disorder proceeding which implied that he is involved in the rally.

The Tamparuli assemblyman added that he was now seeking legal action after receiving a Court Order barring him from entering five designated areas in the City.

Bumburing, in a statement yesterday, said that the Court Order preventing him from entering five designated places and its respective surrounding areas in Kota Kinabalu, virtually shuts him out of Kota Kinabalu for a whole week.

This is because the five places Padang Merdeka, Taman Chong Thien Vun,City Park, Segama Waterfront, Dataran Bandaraya and their surrounding areas encompass almost the whole of Kota Kinabalu, he pointed out.

“To include me as one of the respondents is not only presumptuous but also mischievous in nature as l am definitely not part of the organising committee. APS, of which I am the president, is also not involved in organising the proposed May Day Rally.

“I therefore demand for the immediate removal of my name as one of the respondents as naming me in a public disorder proceeding implies that I am intending to riot or take part in an unlawful assembly. That is not only untrue but also defamatory. I am now seeking legal advice on how to proceed,” he said.

The May Day Rally is being organised by the Sabah chapter of Bersih 2.0 to protest against problems, such as the goods and services tax (GST) and the presence of illegal immigrants in the state.

City Police obtained a court order preventing any gathering in five main open areas in Kota Kinabalu and with effect from April 27 to May 3, even though the rally is only scheduled to last two for hours from 3pm on May 1 at Padang Merdeka.

Bumburing along with five other politicians, namely Sabah DAP chairman cum Kota Kinabalu MP Jimmy Wong Sabah, DAP secretary cum Kapayan assemblyman Dr Edwin Bosi, National PKR vice president cum Penampang MP Darell Leiking, Sabah STAR chairman cum Bingkor assemblyman Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan and Sabah PKR secretary Datuk Maijol Mahap were barred from the gathering.

The Star Online reported that others banned from the rally were activists Tan Sri Simon Sipaun, Jannie Lasimbang, Daniel John Jambun, Kanul Gindol, Wilfred Gaban, Ann Lasimbang, S. M. Muthu, Andrew Ambrose Mudi, Hariey Karmin and Mohd Khairuddin Daud.

Sipaun and Lasimbang are both former Malaysian Human Rights Commissioners (Suhakam).

Sipaun is also the former chairman of human rights association Proham, while Lasimbang is currently vice-chairman of Bersih’s Sabah chapter.
