Marina Mahathir searching for the Malaysia she grew up in

PETALING JAYA - Malaysia's diverse culture, easygoing attitude and acceptance of one another's differences is slowly being eroded with every day that passes, says Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir.

"I can't bear to live in a country where people are constantly sour and angry, where joy and beauty are considered sinful," she said on her Facebook page on Sunday.

Marina said that she is constantly searching for the Malaysia she grew up in.

Describing her Malaysia as a country where people do not stand in judgement of what they wear, or call you a traitor because you are different, or a place with different laws for different people.

"I'm searching for that Malaysia even while I'm at home, imagine if I were to go off somewhere else," said Marina, assuring the public that she is not packing her bags to leave anytime soon.

"But I did say that a country where some people think it's okay to chop off hands or stone people to death is not somewhere I'd like to live in. Like Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan or Syria.

"Not the happiest countries in the world," she added.

"I happen to think that under the shade of this umbrella called Malaysia, we have all kinds of people, all of whom are equal to one another... regardless of colour, religion, origin or whatever else some think must make a difference," said Marina.

"Sorry if that's bad news to some people," she said.
