Sabah kidnap gang leader killed in shootout

KUALA LUMPUR - The leader of a kidnap-for-ransom gang responsible for a string of kidnappings in Sabah was killed in a shootout with security forces in the southern Philippines province of Jolo last night, according to the Philippine military.

The Singapore Straits Times cited a spot report filed by Colonel Alan Arrojado of the Joint Task Group Sulu, who confirmed that security forces had killed Mindas Muktader, one of the leaders of the notorious Muktadil brothers’ gang.

The gang, believed to be lead by Mindas and his brother Kadafy, is one of several offshoots of the Abu Sayyaf militant group operating out of the South Philippines.

The latest case happened just last Thursday, when four armed gunmen believed to be from the Muktadil brothers’ gang raided a seaside seafood restaurant in Sandakan and abducted two Malaysians.

The gang has also been blamed for the kidnapping of Taiwanese tourist Evelyn Chang during a 2013 raid on Pom Pom Island.

Her husband, Hsu Li-min, was killed during the raid and she was released two months later in a remote town in Jolo.

Yet another case pinned on the gang was last year’s kidnapping of Chinese national Gao Huayun and Filipino resort worker Marcy Dayawan from an island resort off the eastern Sabah district of Semporna.

They were both released two months later after Gao’s family reportedly paid a ransom of 300 million pesos (RM24.3 million).

Earlier reports cited Malaysian officials as saying that the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of 500 million pesos to secure Gao’s safe release.
