Mat Malaya remanded for a week

KOTA KINABALU - Captured fugitive Mat Malaya, who was wanted in connection with the shooting of a mechanic, has been remanded for a week by the magistrate’s court here.

The court, however, turned down a police application to further remand his 24-year-old wife who was arrested along with their two-month old daughter while hiding out in a homestay at the foothills of Mount Kinabalu, about 95km from here on Monday night.

Kota Kinabalu City police chief Asst Comm M. Chandra said they were investigating Mat Malaya in connection with illegal possession of a weapon and the attempted murder of a mechanic at a car air conditioning repair shop in Inanam here on May 6.

Police released his wife after recording her statement.

It is understood that police are now trying to locate the gun purportedly used in the shooting incident.

Mat Malaya, whose real name is Mohd Jusnaidi Omar, 44, was hiding out at the homestay for about week before police stormed the place at 10.50pm on Monday.

Mat Malaya, who is the brother of former federal minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar, had allegedly shot the mechanic during an argument.

He was previously charged with a drug trafficking offence in 2007 but freed by the High Court two years later.
