KOTA KINABALU - Twelve-year old girl Elina Maijo (in picture) is suffering from bone cancer, needs to undergo surgery and chemotherapy sessions.
The plight of this young girl’s predicament was recently highlighted in the social media facebook and WhatsApp which went viral.
On hearing her case, an NGO Solidarity Youth Sabah (SBS), took the initiative to visit her at the Likas Hospital last Sunday to understand the situation of the patient and problems faced by her family.
It was learnt that Elina, who is suffering from bone cancer has reached stage four and is urgently in need of serious medical attention which include surgery and later chemotherapy. Her problem came from injury sustained while playing at school.
According to Elina’s father Maijo bin Piok, who is from Kg Maggandai, Kota Marudu, is unemployed and depended on hunting and growing some vegetables to earn a meagre income barely to survive. He has to take care of his 3 children.
He said sending Elina to seek treatment is an arduous task merely to find transport from their home to Kota Marudu town because of the bad and difficult road conditions there.
Each time he had to fork out RM50 per trip to bring his daughter to the Likas Hospital for treatment not to say paying for medical treatment, medicine, surgery and other expenses.
Maijo said, apart from receiving BR1M aid, his family has no other assistance from the authorities while having to cope with increasing cost of living.
Sabah Youth Solidarity hopes that by visiting the cancer patient, will bring some moral support, encouragement and hope for her and the family. They also provided some financial assistance somehow to ease the burden of Maijo’s family.
Sabah Youth Solidarity, a Sabah NGO, urged other agencies and charitable organisations to come forward together to provide assistance much needed at this time by the family in the spirit of solidarity.
