KOTA KINABALU - Tour operators will have to follow new regulations in the Eastern Sabah Security Command’s (Esscom) efforts to prevent cross-border crime.
Esscom said the new rules were to prevent cross-border criminals, including kidnap-for-ransom groups from striking again.
Tour operators would be required to send their appointed boat crews to the nearest police station for special training and filtering, while boats should be equipped with communication systems before they are allowed to sea.
They must also report to security officials before conducting diving activities while security officers would be placed on the boats together with the tourists, said Esscom operations chief Datuk Md Rahim Mohamad.
“We do not allow anyone to carry out activities such as diving in high-risk areas. Boat operators should also leave the diving sites immediately if they notice the presence of unknown people nearby,” he said yesterday.
He congratulated the security forces as well as the community in the Esszone areas following several successes in foiling at least nine intrusion attempts since January this year.
In an incident on May 14, restaurateur Thien Nyuk Fun, 50, and Bernard Then, 39, were grabbed from a seafood restaurant.
Rescue efforts are still underway.
