KUALA LUMPUR - The 13 branch chiefs from Umno's Telok Kemang division in Negri Sembilan may find themselves hauled up to face the party's disciplinary board for going public with their call for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's resignation.
According to Berita Harian today, division chief Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad said a complaint is currently being prepared against the group and this will be forwarded to the party's headquarters tomorrow.
The Malay daily also reported Isa as saying that although the group had during their press conference yesterday claimed to represent 13 branches in his division, they only represented five.
“We regret their move because it goes against the practice of making collective decisions, a policy we have always respected.
“During our last general meeting, Umno's Telok Kemang division had unanimously approved the motion backing Najib's leadership.
“At that time, there was no motion calling for the prime minister to resign,” he was quoted saying after attending the launch of the Telok Kemang MCA building in Port Dickson.
It was reported yesterday that the 13 branch chiefs organised a press conference to declare their loss of confidence in Najib's leadership and their wish for him to step down as president ahead of the next federal polls.
According to The Malaysian Insider, they were led by Umno branch chief from Taman TKK Kamarul Aznan Habibur Rahman.
“We are of the opinion that it is better for the president to step down so that Umno will not be the victim and be punished by voters in the next general election.
“Our main concern is we need to have a strong leader in order to lead Umno in the next general election.
“We are not convinced that today's situation will bring any positive impact in the next elections,” Kamarul was quoted by the news portal as saying at the press conference.
