Rela on the hunt for members with Isis links

The People’s Volunteer Corps or Rela has directed all state directors to identify members involved with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) and criminal activities.

Rela director-general Datuk Kamariah Mohd Noah said it would not compromise with members found guilty of such activities and would withdraw their membership.

“I am still waiting for a full report on a Rela member who was arrested for allegedly being involved in terrorism," she told reporters after closing a Crisis Management Team course at the Rela Training Centre in Hulu Terengganu today.

Yesterday, police officers from the counter-terrorism branch in Bukit Aman arrested a Rela member and four foreigners, believed to be involved with Isis.

The five suspects, between 25 and 59 years old, were arrested in an operation from November 17 to December 1 in Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan and Johor.

Kamariah said Rela had tightened the recruitment of new members since October to ensure that they were clean (have no criminal record).

"We also check their background with the National Registration Department, the National Anti-Drug Agency and the police for verification."
