KUALA LUMPUR - A 19-year-old Malaysian who joined an al-Qaeda terror cell in Syria has been arrested at the KL International Airport.
The Perak-born suspect, who joined the Al Jund Al-Aqsa cell, was detained by the Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division after arriving from Turkey on Monday.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the suspect, a student at a Cairo university, joined the militant group in mid-2014 after contacting cell members via Facebook.
“He then secured safe passage to Syria via Turkey in September 2014. We believe he has undergone weapons training at some of the cell’s training grounds in Hamar and Idlip,” he said in a statement yesterday.
The suspect is trained to use various weapons such as rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), AK-47 machine gun, anti-tank weapons and grenades.
“He is the eighth militant detained by the police. Seven of them have been charged. Out of these, two have been sentenced,” he said, adding that the suspect was detained under SOSMA 2012.
Sources revealed that the suspect was deeply involved in the conflict in Syria.
“Intelligence indicated that he shot a Syiah follower with an AK-47. He was intercepted at KLIA before he had any chance of influencing others,” the source said.
The latest arrest brings the total militants detained since February 2013 to 145 people.
