Single mum conned out of RM23k by online suitor

PETALING JAYA: A single mother who yearned for a family was left RM23,180 poorer and broken-hearted after being scammed by a 50-year-old she met on a matrimonial site.

The victim, known as Ranee, met “architect” Chandru on BharatMatrimony and following several months of online courtship, was thrilled when he promised to marry her after completing a big construction project in New Zealand.

When Ranee met him briefly at the airport while he was in Malaysia, Chandru claimed he had mortgaged his house, but was short of money to ship equipment from Johor.

Ranee banked in RM12,110 in three transactions to two local account numbers, before banking in another RM11,070 this month after borrowing RM33,000 from a loan shark.

Chandru then promised to meet her last week and spend a month with her family before taking her to the United States, but never turned up.

“The money is not much compared to some, but the pain of betrayal is a lot,” Ranee was quoted by The Star as saying at a press conference.

MCA Public Complaints Bureau chief Michael Chong, who was present at the press conference, said nearly RM3 million was lost through similar scams in 2015, with one individual having lost over RM600,000.

Chong said two men and 25 women approached him last year with similar complaints.

“There was also a case of suicide because one woman borrowed so much money and was being harassed by loan sharks,” the English daily reported him as saying. - FMT
