Abducted Malaysians believed held in Jolo by Abu Sayyaf

The four Malaysians abducted by gunmen in the Pulau Ligitan waters off Semporna on Saturday night are believed to be held captive by the Abu Sayyaf terror group in the southern Philippine island of Jolo, according to a report from The Star Online.

The report cited Filipino sources and claimed the Malaysians and their abductors, led by a veteran cross-border kidnapper known as Apo Mike, arrived in Indanan on Jolo island Sunday night.

“The sailors are ‘unharmed and all right’, and under armed guard in the area where the Abu Sayyaf from an undisclosed group are already holding 10 Indonesians grabbed a week earlier from another tugboat, the Brahman 12,” said the report.

It also said that sources did not know if the gunmen had contacted the captives’ families or Malaysian authorities yet to demand a ransom.

Yesterday, Sabah Commissioner Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun said police have yet to receive any word from the kidnappers and could not confirm whether they were held by the Abu Sayyaf group who had also kidnapped the 10 Indonesians over a week ago on March 26.

He said Malaysian police were working with their Philippine counterparts, who have yet to confirm if the captives were in Southern Philippines.

On April 2, Filipino gunmen who were travelling in a speedboat boarded the Malaysian-registered tugboat MV Masfive 6, near Ligitan Island at about 6.15pm and forced four Malaysian sailors to disembark while leaving another six onboard.

The MV Masfive 6 had just delivered timber cargo to Manila and were on the way back to Tawau.

The four abducted Malaysians have been identified as Wong Teck Kang, 31, and his brother Wong Teck Chii, 29; Wong Hung Sing, 34; and Johnny Lau Jung Hien, 21.

The speedboat with the four Malaysian hostages and the gunmen were later seen speeding towards Filipino waters.
