MCMC intensifies probe on selective false news

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is enhancing its investigation concerning four false news items involving the National News Agency (Bernama).

Mentri Besar Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman is also helping in the investigation as he was also among those receiving the false report through the WhatsApp application.

Ahmad Razif hoped that the cooperation and information given to MCMC would facilitate the investigation and identify the mastermind involved.

“I am also thankful to the MCMC and Bernama which are most serious in handling the problem to preserve the integrity of everyone concerned and hope the investigation can be completed as soon as possible,” he told Bernama after receiving a visit from five MCMC officials at his official residence, Seri Iman here yesterday.

The visit was to get information from the Mentri Besar regarding the dissemination of fasle news that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak purportedly postponed his official visit to Terengganu on Monday (May 23).

Meanwhile, chief executive of the MCMC Network Security and Enforcement Sector Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin said he was deeply concerned about the complaint by the Bernama Terengganu Bureau on the false news reporting which had been disseminated since March and the latest involved the country’s number one leader.

“This is something that is very serious because disseminating false news is a major crime especially those involved in abusing the ‘Bernama’ news credit.

“At the moment, investigation is progressing smoothly where three officers from the MCMC in Cyberjaya are in Terengganu to carry out the probe,” he said.

On March 11, Bernama Terengganu Bureau Chief, Zalina Maizan lodged a police report on the article headlined ‘Rosli Sedia Jadi Penggerak Puteri Umno Terengganu’ (Rosli Prepared To Be Terengganu Puteri Umno Mover) and on April 20, a second police report was lodged concerning the article ‘Pas Terengganu Siap Sedia Hadapi Pilihan Raya Negeri’ (Terengganu Pas Ready To Face State Election).

She again lodged a police report on May 4 concerning the article headlined ‘Umno Terengganu Berdepan Laluan Sukar Hadapi Pilihan Raya-Veteran’ (Terengganu Umno Facing A Difficult Path For The Election — Veteran). — Bernama
