Don’t take the law into your own hands, say Papar police

PAPAR - Police urged the public not to take matters into their own hands but instead to go through the proper channels in case of any alleged criminal activities.

A video was spread throughout social media of a man, accused of impregnating a girl, being pinned down by two other men.

Commenting on the video, District Police Chief DSP Batholomew Ak Umpit said society should not carry out justice themselves to the extent of hurting anyone but instead lodge police report for necessary actions to be taken.

“A police report was lodged by the victim believed to have been assaulted by two other men. We have taken the victim for medical treatment after he lodged a report over the incident,” he told Daily Express, adding that the man was a local in his 30s.

The one minute 39 seconds video showed a man being assaulted and pinned down by two men before a woman, believed to be pregnant, spat on him after being instructed to do so.

The incident was believed to have taken place at Papar town, Wednesday afternoon (Nov 6) where the commotion was witnessed by several people.

The video shared by a Facebook user where it received various comments saying that the incident followed an alleged rape incident involving the victim and girl.

However, Batholomew said there were no other reports lodged aside from the victim’s.

“Such claims could not be confirmed or supported as there were no police reports lodged after the incident. However, if there are, police will not hesitate to take further action.

“As of now, police will only carry out investigation based on the report lodged by the victim and are currently searching for the two men involved to get their statements to facilitate investigations,” he said.

He urged those with information to visit the nearest police station to facilitate investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 160 of the Penal Code for fighting in public.
