PKR hit by KDM exodus

Just two days after Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan announced his resignation from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), the opposition party was dealt another blow with the en bloc resignation of its KadazanDusun Murut (KDM) task force leaders and members.

Not less than 27 of them emailed their resignation letters to PKR president Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail yesterday morning, according to the party’s former KDM task force chairman Daniel John Jambun.
Among those who have resigned are PKR Sabah deputy division chiefs, Youth chiefs as well as a divisional secretary and information chief.

They also announced that they are joining Jeffrey’s United Borneo announced that they are joining Jeffrey’s United  Borneo Front (UBF) as they believed that political parties are not the only vehicles to express their opinions thought.

In a press conference which was attended by Jeffrey who is former PKR KDM task force advisor, those who resigned and their supporters Daniel said that they parted amicably with the party on the grounds that they wished to pursue the Borneo Agenda.

“Our decision to resign are independent of Dr Jeffrey’s but we subscribe to and support the new political model and struggles of the UBF. We now feel that our allegiance must go to a cause that we genuinely believe in and which is closer to our hearts as the people of Borneo,” he said.

“We have waited a long time for a clearer direction and a leadership that would empower our political and economic destinies in Sabah and Sarawak, where the Borneo Agenda, to address the equality of our partnership with Malaya in the Federation would be taken seriously on board by the power that control us from West Malaysia,” he stressed.

According to Daniel, they were disheartened by the gradual erosion of their special right and privileges as well as the fact that after nearly half a century in the Federation, Sabah and Sarawak are reduced to the status of poor states with no control over the revenue derived from the vast amount of natural resources in these two states.

The revenue only benefits West Peninsular and the Federal Government, he said.

“We do not subscribe to either the Barisan Nasional (BN) or the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) current political model which seeks to prioritise the agenda of West Malaysia at the expense of Borneo,” he said.
On joining UBF, Daniel said through the movement, they can express their political thoughts, ideas and influence as well as put pressure on political cause they believe in.

He also stressed that most have no intention to contest in the general election and all they want to do is to support a political parties of their choice, he said adding, “whatever parties we choose, we will push our Borneo Agenda through and with UBF.

The group further stated that there was no reason to assume that PKR’S position would be compromised by their resignation and that only the  results of the 13th general election can clarify that.

While they also confirmed of possible partnership with West Malaysian political parties who subscribe to the Borneo Agenda and struggle of UBF, the group does not wish to import problem and internal political strife of west Malaysia into the Borneo state.

“We have enough problems of our own which remain largely unresolved and ignored by both BN and Pakatan Rakyat. So even if we now approached by the PKR leadership (to reverse our decisions), these problems are not going to be resolved by going back to PKR anytime soon,” he said.

According to Daniel, they know many PKR members are not happy with the existing political models of either the BN or PR alliances thought it is not clear if these people will also be resigning from the party.
They also confirmed that while Jeffrey’s resignation was an important consideration in their individual decisions to resign.

“At the end of the day we did so of our own accord because we believe that allegiance should be transferred to a political party that we would empower the territory we love, which in Borneo. Like Dr Jeffrey, we would like to work towards the recognition and acceptance of the Borneo Agenda across political divides from a Borneo alliance platform,” he said. Written by Nancy Lai (BP)
