There must be a royal commission to find out why Sabah’s population has gone up by almost 400% in 40 years, says SAPP
KUALA LUMPUR: The Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) is insisting that the government establish a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to find out why Sabah’s population has increased by nearly 400% in 40 years.
The party’s deputy president, Eric Majimbun, renewed the call after Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia rejected his motion to discuss the issue. It was rejected in chambers, he told reporters.
SAPP, like many other groups, suspects that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government has been covertly giving Malaysian citizenship to illegal immigrants in exchange for their votes.
Majimbun said Pandikar Amin’s reason for rejecting his motion was that the government was already addressing the issue of illegal immigration.
“Of course they are, but the problem persists and the action is taking too long,” he said.
Quoting from a census report, he said the Sabah population had ballooned by 390 % in 40 years.
“For West Malaysia there was an increase of 165%, for Sarawak it was 148%,” he added.
“An RCI has to be established to find out how and why.”
Majimbun called for a “total approach” to resolve the issue of illegal immigration, noting that several official efforts had failed.
Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein announced last week that the government would embark on another amnesty programme for illegal immigrants. Under the scheme, to be rolled out next month, up to two million illegal immigrants will be allowed to work and live freely in Malaysia.

Sandakan: The Sabah Immigration Department has fully implemented a biometric system at all border entry points in the State in an effort to check cross-border crime.
Its Director, Mohammad Mentek, said the installation of the system was completed in April and a dry run was conducted in May.
"The system is commissioned starting this month and the use of fingerprint scanning system is running smoothly," he told reporters here, Wednesday.
Mohammad said the adoption of the biometric system could help prevent cross-border crime as it would provide information on foreign nationals, who overstay and use false passports, and their entry and exit points.
Meanwhile, four masterminds of human trafficking and immigrant smuggling activities, including a Filipino woman, were arrested in an operation mounted by the Sabah Immigration Department here last Sunday.
Mohammad said the four masterminds comprised two Philippine nationals and two Malaysian men aged 39 and 40.
He said 21 Filipino women were also detained in the five-hour operation which began at 9.45pm. Two of the masterminds were nabbed with seven Filipino women at a hotel here, while the other two were arrested with 14 other women in a raid on a house in Batu 7.
He said only one of the Filipino women possessed a valid passport, while the rest did not have any identification documents.
Mohammad said the four masterminds had been remanded for a week to facilitate the investigation under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, while the women were also being held for further action under the Immigration Act.
He said initial investigation found that the suspects had smuggled in the women to Sandakan by promising them jobs as nightclub singers and waitresses in Sabah, Labuan and Sarawak.
"The masterminds were also believed to have provided the women with all travel requirements, including forged passports.
"We also believe that Sandakan is just a transit district before the women were deployed elsewhere," he added.

ReplyDeleteDo not let Sabahans become refugee on their own land.
harap penyelesaian terbaik akan dapat dicari bagi menangani masalah pati ini.
ReplyDeletesaya tak faham kenapa RCI ni ditolak sedangkan ia salah satu cara untuk kenalpasti warga asing/PATI di Sabah.
ReplyDeleteno more amnesty for illegal immigrant..just shoot them on the head already...
ReplyDeleteRCI is not enough to solve the PATI issue.
ReplyDeleteThe government is not fully responsible to the PATI issue, the local people are in a way also involved in contributing to this issue.
ReplyDeleteHopefully this illegal immigrant issue could be solved as soon as possible before it gets more worse than it is now.
ReplyDeletePemimpin Sabah bukan bersuka-suka perjuangkan tetang masalah sabah.
