University college sued by parents of former student

KOTA KINABALU: The parents of a former student of a college have resorted to legal action against the institute for allegedly failing to live up to promises stipulated in their brochure.

Speaking at a second news conference facilitated by Luyang assemblywoman, Melanie Chia, at her office in Bornion Centre yesterday, disgruntled parents, Dr. Kang Kee Yeow and his wife, Judy Chai, claimed that the facilities at the college's hostel was contrary to what students expected.

He said students were made to believe that the hostels would be equipped with the basics such as a bed, a table and a wardrobe and that only eight people would be sharing a house.

"But we found out that between 10 and 12 students were made to share one apartment, causing overcrowding," he said.

A side from filing legal action against the college, Dr. Kang has also submitted a complaint to the Prime Minister's Department's Public Complaints Bureau near here yesterday.

In his complaint, Dr. Kang alleged that the college lied about its accommodation facilities for students, citing the case of his daughter, who enrolled for a diploma course there, for which he paid RM870 for the course and lodging.

He claimed that upon enrolling for the course, his daughter was brought to an apartment that was overcrowded and lacking in the facilities promised in the brochure.

"Since the students were not supplied with a wardrobe, they had to hang their clothes by the side of their beds. This is dangerous, just in case of a fire," he said.

He further claimed that the college is currently operating without an occupational certificate (OC) issued by the relevant authorities.

"I have been made to untlerstand that without the certificate, a building cannot be occupied or allowed to operate," he said. "I am appalled by the conduct of the institute that thinks very little of the students' safety," he added.

Also present at the press conference was Alice Lim, the couple's counsel.

  5. Any college shouldn't lie about this. 10-12 people sharing under one roof? It must be hard to breath inside there...

  6. kolej ini sepatutnya mendapat OC terlebih dahulu sebelum memulakan operasinya.

  7. This is a lesson for the education institutions for giving poor facilities instead of what has promise.

  10. How come the college operates without an occupational certificate (OC)?? In case if anything bad happen, who should be blame? Safety first.

  12. My daughter is currently doing her clinical posting and residing in the above mentioned hostels for the last 3 months. I have no complaints about it, though there are 8 (not 10-12 as stated in the article) its spacious and equipped with all necessary facilities. Accuracy of the article seems questionable

  20. Kebajikkan pelajar perlulah dijaga juga. Keselesaan mereka itu penting. Jadi harap setiap kolej memikirkan hal ini.

  21. I find it odd as its a question of choice; if you are not happy with it then why stay there.. acccomodation is not forced on students

if it is questionable, why don't just contact Dr. Kang to pay a visit to your daughter hostel? it's necessary since your experience show otherwise. after that, your cross-inspect the said apartment that Dr. Kang daughter used to live.

Almost all college only looking for profit solely. Bcoz of the study loan. my cousin also at the same situation. living in overcrowded apartment. not only 10-12 students per hostel@apartment, sometimes 12-14.

  28. Whatever the complaint, the M of HE should ensure that their investigations are factual, unbiased, uncorrupted, and most importantly they speak to relevant parties and not accept 'here say' evidence.
I have a son, and daughter studying in the diploma programme in this college and I am proud to say that both of them are doing well both academically and in the ways of life, although they come from pampered backgrounds.Perhaps if Dr.Forest had sent a maid to attend to his daughter's basic needs, this complaint might never have surfaced.
