New guidelines on SNS

CyberSecurity M'sia Introduces New Internet Guidelines On Social Networking Sites

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 (Bemama ) -- CyberSecurity Malaysia has introduced a new Internet guideline called, Best Practice on Social Networking Sites (SNS).

CyberSecurity Malaysia is the national cyber security specialist centre and an agency under the purview of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).

In a statement today, the Chief Executive Officer of CyberSecurity Malaysia, Prof Datuk Husin Jazri said the purpose of establishing the guidelines is to assist SNS users, either organisations or individuals to understand the "darkside" of SNS.

"By understanding it, users can be well equipped with the "Dos" and the "Don't s" while enjoying the benefits of using SNS.

"The Best Practice is used as acceptable practices that support usage of the SNS with more ethics as well as protecting the security of users and privacy needs,” he said.

Husin said the lack of awareness amongst users in terms of the threats, vulnerabilities and risks can lead to poor control and management of SNS usage and the need for it.

As of August this year, a total of  625  incidents related to social networking sites have been reported to CyberSecurity Malaysia via the Cyber999 Help Centre compared to the same period of 2010, which had 124 incidents.
