Why no announcement on RCI?

KOTA KINABALU: The people of Sabah were frustrated when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak did not make any announcement with regards to the setting up of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on illegal immigrants in the State.

Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) Deputy President Datuk Eric Majimbun said the no announcement on the RCI showed that the Federal Government being nonchalant to the wants of genuine Sabahans here.

"Najib was expected to make an announcement about the RCI during his two-day official visit here but he didn't.

"According to Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok, the Federal Cabinet had made a decision on the RCI and the Federal Cabinet had given the mandate to Najib to announce the decision, but why was no announcement made?

"Sabahans were frustrated," he said in a statement.

He said the no announcement was a big slap in the face of Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties like PBS and UPKO who had raced against each other telling the people that Najib would make the announcement during the visit.

Eric said as of now the people of Sabah wants the Federal Government to make a stand whether the RCI would be set up or not.

He said the people also wants to know the term of references of the RCI if the Federal Government agree to set it up and it seems that Najib may have reservations because the RCI may adversely affect support for UMNO by PTIs or the possibility that the RCI issue could see UMNO leaders dragged to the court of laws.

According to Eric, the other possibility was because former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamed had disagreed with it because his name was involved with "Project IC" and that is the reason behind Najib's fear to make such announcement and so it is quite clear that the Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) component leaders had fooled the people that Najib would be making such announcement.

"SAPP does not think that the RCI would be set up. In fact SAPP had made all efforts to get the people's support to sign a petition in support of the RCI ... UMNO leaders did not budge for fear it could open a can of worms.

"SAPP has called on the State Government to enforce existing Sabah Laws as stated in the Inquiry Commission Enactment 1981 to give powers to the Head of State to appoint commissioners to probe the matter.

"SAPP felt that the enactment must be enforced without prejudices," he said.

    1. SAPP was never quiet about projek IC or illegal immigrants...and in fact they have brought this matter to the then PM Ahmad Badawi...in their well documented memorandum on "the mother of all threats" Umno and BN did not bother to entertain. Even though in BN, SAPP has been very vocal but branded as nuisance by Sleeping Badawi.

  21. Prime Minister will be making the much-awaited announcement with regard to the federal cabinet’s decision on a proposal to set up a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on illegal immigrants in Sabah.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak would make the announcement on the RCI soon.

He said there was expectation for the announcement during his visit here last week but Najib would have more to say at the right time.

The Cabinet has decided that the Prime Minister will be the one to talk about this matter at a more opportune time.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The call for the setting up of a RCI has received the support of the eight Sabah Barisan Nasional component parties and the opposition with the hope of a comprehensive solution to the three-decade-old problem.

The presence of the illegal immigrants has been the main contributing factor in Sabah's abnormal population increase from 636,431 people in 1970 to 2,449,389 in 2000 or an increase of 285%. So Federal govt will implement RCI for Sabah.

  24. Cabinet meeting discussed in detail the issue of the proposed RCI, one of the hotly debated issues in Sabah, for both the state Barisan Nasional (BN) component party leaders and the opposition.

  25. Tan Sri Bernard Dompok believes the Prime Minister will announce the much-awaited Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the illegal immigrant issue in Sabah soon. I think the Prime Minister will be able to say more about this.

I think I abide by what has been decided by the Cabinet that the Prime Minister will be the one to talk about this.

    1. At the Cabinet’s last meeting on Wednesday, February 15, a day before Najib’s Sabah trip, Nazri tabled a rough draft of the RCI’s terms of reference for discussion.

      Delete
    2. It was discussed but the terms of reference were not finalised because Cabinet wanted input from Sabah BN parties and the state government.

      Delete
    3. And for that (reason), despite the huge expectation that the PM would announce the RCI on February 16, he was simply not ready to announce it.

    4. If Najib had announced the formation of the panel during his trip, the prime minister would have been criticised for being unable to offer clear answers on the panel’s scope of investigation and its members.
