How good, SAMUR Project for Sipitang people?

By Haji Amde Sidik

All nice things have been said about the RM4.6million SAMUR (Sabah Ammonia Urea) plant project in Sipitang, which its ground breaking was done by the Prime Minister last month (13/02/2012)

The project is said to be good for Sipitang people.

According to BERNAMA report, SAMUR once fully operational is expected to provide 400 jobs.

It would create economic impact to Sipitang such as agriculture, hotel and catering, plant maintenance and transportations and therefore provide employment for Sipitang community, said General Manager of PETRONAS Regional Office, Labuan, Joseph Podtung

Podtung didn’t elaborate how and what extent of activities that would impact on the agriculture, what will transpire and the like.

My question, why is it a project with such magnitude RM4.6 billion could only provide 400 jobs?

I can only imagine this is very specialised industry in nature, and therefore only need specialised workers, if that is the case, I think Sipitang people isn’t the ultimate beneficiary.

Next how much influence are our YBs in ensuring that people of Sipitang be accommodated into this project, which I’m pretty sure once this project is fully operational, they couldn’t even come nearer to the premises.

We are yet to get the information of the other side of the story of ammonia urea if any.  So far we only knew from reading from other countries that have experienced with ammonia urea, a colourless gas with pungent odour, both caustic and hazardous to health. This could be an issue in the future, which it should be explained to people of today.

  5. When the Samur project is being developed in Sipitang, there will be more efforts to developed the surrounding areas such as better roads, better facilities, better broadband coverage et cetera, et cetera in order for the Samur project to work out, the people would directly and indirectly benefit from the developments there as well. Not to mention the job opportunities before, during and after the Samur plant was set up and the economic benefits to Sabah due to the production and sales of fertilizer.

    2. Batu Sapi election is a tester for SAPP, we can see from what had happen, BN's money machinery at its best coupled with Pakatan's backstabbing tactics. BN had won not becoz they win the local people's heart, it is becoz of the Project IC voters that they won.

As to PKR, there is nothing to celebrate about being the number two, that is becoz of your attack on SAPP rather than the BN, just to get to number 2...what is the point???

SAPP fought against two giants, the whole BN machinery and the whole Pakatan machinery...all from the peninsular, with lots of money until the Sandakan banks went dry.

Is this what you call victory???? Everything sucks here!

  7. We should support the project which I feel somehow will provide opportunites for the people there.

The local people may not have the specialise skill ,however, I think the factory does need other workers. Also it will be good for the shopkeepers and the local markets...

  30. actually, u need vendor to maintain the plant. u'll have the electrical vendor, mechanical vendor, civil vendor, etc. this vendor this require to base their office near the plant. their workers shud include the local there.

this is where the local can enjoy the benefit of the plant. pay sumtime around rm6/hour. if expert, example wireman, rm10/hour (lowest). so usually, most of the maintenance work will be outsource. only the process work (400+ workers) need to operate the plant.

so, please, do think first. dun try to 'laga' or provoke others saying that the people there would not benefit anything. trust me, people who live near the area will get the benefit most. only after they couldn't find someone expert enough to handle certain job, then they will call outsiders to do the job.

in this type of plant, fast response is crucial. thanks
