Sabah can’t be compared to Alaska and Hawaii

 Daniel John Jambun

Two BN leaders, namely Datuk Yahya Hussein and Datuk Donald Mojuntin thought they had a good point when they said that we shouldn’t be too fussy about the date of our National Day, that celebrating it on August 31 shouldn’t be made an issue because it is not that important. Yahya had said that a good example is Alaska and Hawaii who joined the United States but never made a fuss about their national day or independence day.

But several facts about history beg repeating to get a clear perspective of Yahya’s argument. First, Sabah was not annexed into the Malaysian Federation like Hawaii was. Sabah, after becoming an independent nation for two weeks, teamed up with Singapore, Sarawak and Malaya to form a federation called Malaysia – as equal partners – on September 16, 1963. When Sabah formed Malaysia with the other partners, there was no Malaysia yet, unlike the case with Alaska which was acquired by the USA in 1867, 91n years after the independence of the 13 United States of America from Great Britain in 1776. Hawaii was annexed into the USA in 1898, 122 years after 1774.

For the education of Yahya and Mojuntin, Alaska did not even ‘join’ the United States. It was bought by the USA from the Russian Empire for USD7.2 million Russia, fearing a war with Britain that would allow the British to seize Alaska, wanted to proceed with the sale. Being a commodity which was the object of sales and purchase, Alaska cannot in any sense claim to have a proper national day, or least of all, an independence day of its own, because in reality it didn’t get any sort of independence when it joined the US. In the case of Hawaii, the state was forcibly robbed from the hands of the powerless Hawaiian monarchy.

Original cheque used to buy over Hawaii
Teri Sforza werites that in Hawaii’s case “It's a story of money, power and betrayal. Hawaii was a proud and independent nation when Capt. James Cook [came] in 1778. Hawaiians had run their own affairs for some 2,000 years. The kingdom signed trade and peace treaties with the United States, England and other foreign nations, each recognizing Hawaii's independence. Flocks of American missionaries began arriving from Boston in 1820 and were welcomed warmly; many decided to stay on the islands rather than return to the frigid Northeast. Their new roots in paradise went deep: The missionaries became powerful sugar planters and politicians, often serving as advisers to the king. The monarchy was weakened. The planters' powers were strengthened. The United States was the biggest market for Hawaii's sugar. The transplanted planters longed for Hawaii to become part of the United States so they wouldn't have to worry about tariffs. The U.S. minister to Hawaii, John L. Stevens, was anxious to annex the islands as well. Sensing this, Queen Liliuokalani was on the verge of imposing a new Constitution shifting power back to the monarchy - but she never got the chance. On Jan. 16, 1893, U.S. Marines landed in Honolulu armed with Howitzer cannons and carbines. A group of 18 men - mostly American sugar farmers - staged a coup, proclaiming themselves the ‘provisional government’ of Hawaii. Stevens gave immediate recognition to them as Hawaii's true government.

Queen Liliuokalani
Imprisoned in Iolani Palace, Queen Liliuokalani issued a statement: "I yield to the superior force of the United States of America, whose minister, his excellency John L. Stevens, has caused United States troops to be landed at Honolulu. ... Now, to avoid any collision of armed forces and perhaps the loss of life, I do, under this protest, and impelled by said force, yield my authority until such time as the government of the United States shall undo the action of its representative and reinstate me".

The monarchy’s power was never reinstated until today. So, Datuk Yahya, note that Hawaii did not gain independence by ‘joining’ America because it was annexed (forced to join) and thus LOST its independence. So how on earth can anyone compare Sabah’s history of together forming Malaysia and Alaska being bought and Hawaii being forced to join a nation?

I hope with this knowledge, the BN leaders can stop trying to fool Sabahans by using Alaska and Hawaii to justify the neglect of Sabah’s demand for the recognition of September 16 as our common Malaysia Day.

  2. ANNEXATION & TAKEOVER BY MALAYA

Daniel, I think you are incorrect about the facts. Sabah and Sarawak were forced to join Malaysia. IN FACT ANNEXED BY MALAYA WITH BRITISH HELP!

Brunei was intended to be included but the Sultan did not fall for the Malayan agenda to seize control of Brunei oil and not even make a concession to let the Sultan have the right to become Head of State.

The North Borneo (Sabah) and Sarawak people were not given a chance to have a referendum. Even if the British had held a proper referendum under UN supervision the people were not prepared or fully informed to make such a decision owing to the fact that the majority of the people would not have understood they were being shanghaied into Malaysia with the British going all out with their invasion scare!

The question of national independence is about the right of the people to self-determination and should not be hijacked by an issue about being incorporated into Malayan domination because of some invasion scare tactics used to confuse the people.

The same applies to your arguments that Sabah and Sarawak "teamed up" with S'pore and Malaya.

But as you well know, the decision was made by a few British selected local leaders not elected leaders. They should have held local elections form the new independent government. Yes Sabah and Sarawak got their "notional" not "national independence" but there was no elected government to represent the people. A referendum should have been part of the election campaign on the merits and demerits of becoming part of another political entity when we did not even enjoy the short lived "independence"!

The Malaysia formation issue was never voted on by the people. Even the British colonial governors in both colonies to their credit agreed that neither Sabah nor Sarawak were ready to consider Malaysia as an option.

To this day the debate continues on the merits and value of being part of the Malayan states despite our claim that we are "equal partners".

We need to see that the "Malaysia Agreement" is just one of those unequal treaties imposed in the wake of the anti-Malaysia Brunei Uprising and the Sarawak guerrilla war of independence. It was a fact that the people took up arms to oppose Malaysia! And yet the British suppressed the uprisings and forced their idea on us.To deflect world criticisms they gave us a pretend independence to legitimize their Malaysia plan.

All the facts point to our being rushed into Malaysia. When the British and Malayans jointly announced they were going ahead with Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak leaders were caught by surprised. This is recorded history! They could have said "No" but these leaders were so inapt and inexperienced they did not even know that their independence right was being bargained away! Then they made a last minute demand to guarantee Sabah and Sarawak rights with their 20/18 points agreement which is all forgotten now!

You can see that they did not bother to consult even the compliant Bornean leaders...except to scare them with threat of foreign invasion and communist takeover.

    1. PART 2

      MALAYAN INVASION & TAKEOVER

Yes there was an invasion and takeover by Malaya under the cover of British suppressing of the Brunei uprising and then the counter-insurgency war in Sarawak. This is annexation by force of arms as Indonesia to to West Papua and East Timor.

Further you are aware that they avoided holding a UN de-colonization independence referendum and carried out a bogus opinion poll. Even then there got only 30% of people interviewed (Phantoms? who were they? no one to this day knows who had been "surveyed").

The rationales used to justify Malaysia have all been proven to be false. The invasion scare did not scare Brunei into joining not prevent Singapore leaving Malaysia.

Both are free and prospering as independent countries.

Brunei and Singapore are the bests example for arguing why Sabah and Sarawak must leave Malaysia and Malayan colonial domination ASAP before the Malayans strip our land bare!

To argue that Sabah and Sarawak had any free choice in the matter is to deviate from the facts.

There is a revealing article by Dr.Ooi Keat Gin On How Sarawak was conned into formation of Malaysia

As many people out there are saying Malaysia is nothing more than a ponzi scheme. Malaya has taken everything including our independence and given back crumbs!

Should we as the leaders and educated elites condemn the people to a new colonial slavery for another 50 years?

    3. FELLOWS WE SHOULD NOT DITCH THE BEGGING ATTITUDE. "IF" WE ARE EQUALS PARTNERS WHY SHOW SO MUCH DEFERENCE TO THE MALAYANS? THEY NEVER RESPECT OUR RIGHTS! WHY HOPE WHEN IT IS YOUR JUST INDEPENDENCE RIGHTS!?

On close examination the "M'sia Agt" there are not 3 equal partners from the head of state position to the sharing of wealth. The agreement is clearly an unequal and discriminatory treaty broken again and again BY MALAYA for 49 years.

Any lawyer can tell that the Malayans repudiated the Agreement by their failure to comply with the agreement and their atrocious and exploitative conduct of the "unequal" country to country relation.

It is now common in many previous British colonies still practicing English law to have similar Family Law legislations. One of the grounds for divorce is that the marriage has broken down due to irreconcilable differences.

The union between Malaya and Sabah and Sarawak has broken down beyond repair and yet we have "enlightened" lawyers and other educated elites who want to continue this abusive relationship.

Malaya has truly abused and dominated Sabah and Sarawak as no more than comfort women and raped them at will and steal our wealth to develop Malaya and make so many UMNO crooks millionaires and billionaires?

Isn't it time we end this enslavement as sex slaves for Malaya and declare our independence?

If we can see this analogy than we must rise to fight and free ourselves for independence.

No longer must we tolerate being colonial subjects and as colonies!

  20. STAR is pursuing the Federal govt. to give great emphasis on celebrating 16 Sept. every year.

    This is right.

SAPP is emphasizing the celebration of 31 August only for Sabah by Sabahan.

    This is not right.

The right spirit should be is to celebrate 31 August for Malaya and Sabah by all Malaysians, meaning sabahan and malayan are mutually respecting this date.

While this date is important,...the emphasis and weight given to this date shouldn't be more than what should be accorded to the date 0f 16 September.Because Sabah and Sarawak were not simply annexed without an agreement or condition. The is MA63 as we know it.

This is the issue that SAPP and STAR should fight for because the BN govt. is deemed playing down the importance of this date (Sept. 16)which would then automatically give Borneo states an implicit sense of equality as the new 'annexed' state of Malaysia.

DJJ seems to refuse the notion of being an annexed state. The fact is in principle Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore were annexed by Malaya. That cannot be changed or argued. However this is not a simple or straight forward annexation case. Malaya was intrusted by the British govt. to ensure that Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore had been treated fairly as underlined by the Malaysia Agreement.

So,the most DJJ can do is to argue with the BN govt. what they haven't done to develop Sabah and Sarawak, and what agreement they didn't heed.

No point to argue 20P. Sabah opposition leaders should focus on MA1963 instead and what responsibilities the BN govt hasn't fulfilled or betrayed.

"Because Sabah and Sarawak were not simply annexed without an agreement or condition. The is MA63 as we know it"

There is the M'sia Agreement and many other collateral agreement especially the famous 20 & 18 Points Agreements- which are really Sarawak and Sabah's Bill of Rights, respectively.

The M'sia Agreement is an "unequal treaty" imposed under duress of the alleged threat of foreign invasion and using the emergency cover of suppressing the anti-Malaysia Brunei rebellion and Sarawak guerrilla independence war.(Much has been written on this aspect).

In lieu of the 18/20 Points Agreement there was not any protection offered nothing more than a British style democracy which immeeidately became abused and corrupted with emergency rule and fraudulent elections.

These were in a way just he veneer of dressing to legitimize the main agenda of Britain transferring power to Malaya and UMNO being the loyal feudal colonial retainer as a move to consolidate British interest.

However, the British underestimated their UMNO lackeys and soon regretted because the Retainer was sly and untrustworthy. UMNO proceeded to grab control over the British interests under "nationalist" pretexts and parceling out the 3 nations' rich assets and advantages amongst the UMNO chiefs and hanger ons/cronies.

"DJJ seems to refuse the notion of being an annexed state. The fact is in principle Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore were annexed by Malaya. That cannot be changed or argued. However this is not a simple or straight forward annexation case. So,the most DJJ can do is to argue with the BN govt. what they haven't done to develop Sabah and Sarawak, and what agreement they didn't heed"

The importance of the 18/20 Points is that they are evidence of the concessions made by Malaya (Britain did not even think of proposing these as their agenda was to keep Sabah and Sarawak weak and dependent on its proxy Malaya).

All the above agreements need to be seen and read in context of the Constitution WHICH is institutionalizes a form of apartheid which in itself is an unequal document in terms of Sabah and Sarawak as independent countries/partners..

If we agree with annexation all these documents are just shams to legitimise Malayan colonial rule.

May be it would be useful to look at the Indonesian treatment of East Timor and West Papua. The case of East Timor Indonesia simply invaded. In our case the invasion was made under cover of suppression of the Brunei Uprising and Sarawak guerrilla independence war. Malayans forces came in with the British forces.

Historically, British Australian forces "liberated" the North Borneo protectorates in 1945. For all intents and purposes Britain never officially sent armed forces into North Borneo. Thus in late 1962, they invaded for the first time and then assisted the deployment of Malayan forces to occupy Sabah and Sarawak till today.

If you submit to foreign Malayan rule (including those arguing "internal colonialism") then of course you will have to agree with the Malaysia Agreement.

But if you are for genuine Sabah and Sarawak independence then there cannot be any compromise.

The evidence of Malayan colonialism is seen in the 49 years of Malayanization (domination) and looting of our resources in typical colonial behaviour.

It is COLONIALISM in whatever disguise it comes in! Like a wolf in sheepskin.

    ReplyDelete
  23. "For all intents and purposes Britain never officially sent armed forces to invade Northern Borneo in 1945" word".

The colonies protectorate status was changed to "colonial status" by 1946. This was when the colonial occupation began- by agreement with the local rulers- the Sarawak Kingdom and the North Borneo Company.
